What strings together Johnstown, PA, the UU Church of Cortland, Pfister family history, and the recent flooding in
Nepal? The people invited to speak at the Universalist Church of Cortland in the mid 1800s were visionaries and activists
delivering lectures on ideas of great importance at the time. As we look back we can see that the issues they spoke
on still resonate today. Clara Barton, the nurse whose work during the Civil War organizing donated medical
supplies for the Union Army and identifying missing soldiers post-war lead her to found the American chapter of the
Red Cross and become a leader in disaster response.
